BEYOND THE practice: 30-Hour Yoga Immersion

Two days to explore the yoga behind the practice.

You know the poses. But do you know the why behind them?

Maybe you've been practising yoga for a while. You recognise the shapes, understand the rhythm of a class and know your Warrior II from your Downward Dog. But perhaps you've started to feel like there's another layer you haven't had the opportunity to explore.

Why do we practice these shapes? What is alignment really asking of your body? Where did the practice come from? And when we say that yoga is more than the poses, what does that actually mean?

The Study of Yoga is a weekend for getting curious.

Over two days, we'll slow the practice down enough to look more closely at it. We'll break down familiar asana, explore alignment and question some of the things we commonly hear in class and give you space to actually feel and investigate the shapes rather than simply moving through them.

Then we'll widen the lens beyond asana, exploring the history and philosophy of yoga, the Eight Limbs, and an OM and mantra immersion, before coming together for Kirtan, experiencing practices and ideas that don't always have space in a regular yoga class.

Alongside the learning, there will still be plenty of time to practise. Expect extended Hatha and Vinyasa practices, pranayama, meditation, Yin and sound woven.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This weekend is for you if you've ever thought: “I love yoga, but I feel like I've only scratched the surface.” You don't need to be advanced. You don't need to know any philosophy. You simply need an existing practice and the curiosity to know more.

Maybe you've been wondering why your body experiences certain poses differently, want to understand some of the language and philosophy you've heard in class, or you're simply ready to explore yoga beyond a 60-minute practice, this weekend gives you the time and space to ask questions, investigate and learn. This is an opportunity to become a student of your own practice.

SATURDAY

We begin with what you already know: asana.

Through an extended Hatha practice, discussion and two practical Asana Labs, we'll take familiar postures out of the flow of a class and give ourselves time to explore them. We'll look at shapes including Tadasana, Warrior II, Triangle, Downward Dog, backbends and forward folds, exploring foundations, alignment, range of movement, variations and how individual anatomy influences the way a posture looks and feels.

Rather than asking “What is the perfect version of this pose?”, we'll start asking:

What is this shape asking of my body and what is its intention?

We'll finish the day by moving out of analysis and back into experience with Yin Yoga and sound.

SUNDAY

If Saturday asks how, Sunday begins to explore why.

We'll start with an extended Vinyasa, pranayama and meditation practice before stepping back to look at the bigger picture. Where did yoga come from? How did we arrive at the practice we recognise today? What are the Eight Limbs and where does asana actually sit within them?

In the afternoon we'll move from learning back into experience through an exploration of sacred mantra, before coming together for Kirtan and our closing circle.

By the end of the weekend, we don't expect you to have all the answers.

We hope you leave with a deeper understanding of the practice you already love, more confidence in exploring what works for your own body, and a whole new set of questions you're excited to keep asking.

You practise yoga. Now get curious about it.
